The long-awaited anime adaptation of Sakamoto Days has finally arrived, and episode 1 does exactly what a good premiere should: it introduces us to its world, sets up the main characters, and leaves us curious about what comes next.
We meet Taro Sakamoto, once the most feared hitman in the underworld. Now? He’s a married family man who runs a convenience store and spends his days doting on his wife and daughter. The catch: he’s promised never to kill again.
Of course, the past doesn’t stay buried for long. Enter Shin Asakura, a psychic assassin who can literally read minds. Ordered to either bring Sakamoto back to the business or eliminate him, Shin confronts the ex-legend head-on. What follows is a blend of tense showdowns, wild action, and laugh-out-loud gags that highlight just how dangerous (and lovable) Sakamoto still is.
Balanced storytelling, Episode 1 nails the tricky mix of action, comedy, and heart. One moment we’re watching slick fight choreography, the next we’re laughing at over-the-top gags, and then we get a touching glimpse of Sakamoto’s family life.
Character chemistry – The dynamic between Shin and Sakamoto is already fun to watch. Their clash feels less like a one-time fight and more like the beginning of a reluctant partnership.
Some scenes look amazing, while others clearly cut corners. Big action moments shine, but quieter transitions sometimes feel rushed.
Some jokes about Sakamoto’s weight might not land for every viewer, and the mix of slapstick comedy with graphic action could feel uneven depending on your taste.
As premieres go, Sakamoto Days Episode 1 is entertaining, stylish, and a strong setup for what’s to come. It doesn’t overstuff the first episode, instead focusing on Sakamoto’s new life, his promise not to kill, and the tension with Shin.
